Implant Crowns

Dental implant crowns restore the health of your oral condition by replacing the function and appearance of your missing natural teeth. An implant crown is an artificial tooth that has been structured and developed to have the same durability, support and aesthetic as natural teeth.

What Are Implant Crowns?

Implant crowns serve as the crown portion where patients eat with and show smiles. Implant crowns are custom fabricated to perfectly fit the measured space of the missing tooth and shape of the gums as they connect to the dental implants that have been surgically placed and healed in the jaw bone. Just like dental crowns, implant crowns are structured and fabricated to have high stability, durability, and aesthetics that mimic natural teeth. Porcelain or ceramic, titanium, and metal are most commonly used as crown materials, and the best option can be discussed with the patient.

One of the largest differences between dental crowns and dental implant crowns is that while a crown fits to an existing tooth and root structure, dental implant crowns are connected to the implant that replaces the missing tooth.

What Completes an Implant Restoration?

An implant serves as the root of a natural tooth. There are more steps to deliver an implant crown to the implant that is now fixed to your jawbone. Three parts make up an implant-supported restoration:

  • The dental implant

  • The abutment, which interfaces with the tooth implant.

  • The dental implant crown, which is placed on the abutment.

How is a Crown Attached to a Dental Implant?

Once the dental implant is placed and fully healed in the bone, the implant crown is inserted on the implant by a connective fixture called an abutment. This abutment can be fully customized to fit the implant and gum tissue and is fabricated with zirconia (ceramic), titanium, or metal. At Pristine Dental NYC, customized abutments are always chosen for all patients to create a natural appearance of a tooth that seems like it is emerging out from the gums, aid in better oral hygiene, and minimize plaque and food impaction.

There are two common ways of delivering dental implant crowns to their implants. A screw-retained crown will allow the crown and abutment to be screwed to the implant while a cement-retained crown will be inserted by cementing the implant crown to the abutment and implant.

The Benefits of Implant Crowns

There are many benefits of implant crowns, with one of the most important being the protection they provide to keep jawbone tissue loss at a minimum. Other benefits include:

  • It helps prevent gaps in the remaining natural teeth

  • It offers a permanent and long-term solution that stays in place while providing maximum durability

  • Because of how secure the implant crowns are placed in the jawbone, the dental implants replicate the look and feel of natural teeth

  • Cleaning and maintaining the implant crowns is just like taking care of your natural teeth
